Etsy title checker

Paste a title. We check it against the 140-character limit and Etsy's title rules, flag keyword chains and repeated words, and show a short-style rewrite built from your own words.

Try one of the examples below, or paste a title from your shop.

Results appear here as you type.

What the Etsy title checker looks for

These are the same title rules our free shop audit applies to every listing in a shop, and the reasons each one costs you views:

Length vs 140Etsy's hard limit. Anything past 140 characters is cut. We also warn above 120, because nothing past the first 60 or so is visible in search results anyway.
Keyword chainThree or more phrases separated by commas, bars or dashes — or twelve-plus words with no punctuation at all. Shoppers can't tell what the item is, and Etsy has said plainly that it prefers short titles.
Repeated wordsA word used three or more times. Etsy doesn't count repetitions as extra relevance; it just reads as stuffing.
ALL CAPSEtsy's rules forbid titles that are mostly capitals. Capital letters also make a title harder to scan on a phone.
Trailing "digital download"The format matters, but tacked on the end of a chain it becomes the last thing Etsy truncates. Put it in parentheses after the product name.
First-phrase readabilityThe first 5–7 words are the listing's name everywhere it appears: search, Google, Pinterest, your own shop page. We flag a first phrase over eight words or under two.

The short-style structure

Since Etsy moved search toward natural-language matching, the titles that both rank and convert follow a simple shape:

<Subject> <Type>, <Style or Occasion> (<format>)

  • Subject + type is the product name: "Pressed Wildflower Frame", "Woodland Bear Nursery Print", "Personalized Leather Wallet". This is the part that has to match the first sentence of your description.
  • Style or occasion adds the second phrase a shopper is likely to type: "Real Dried Botanical Wall Art", "Engraved Anniversary Gift for Him".
  • Format only when it changes what the buyer receives: "(Digital Download)", "(Set of 4)", "(Unframed)".

Typical length is 50–90 characters. That leaves the title readable in full on mobile search results, and puts everything else — the other ten search phrases — where it belongs: in 13 tags and the attributes.

Three before-and-after titles

Keyword chainShort style
Dried Flower Frame Pressed Flowers Wall Art Botanical Decor Cottagecore Gift For Her Mom Birthday Wildflower Home Decor Handmade GiftPressed Wildflower Frame, Real Dried Botanical Wall Art
Nursery Print, Woodland Nursery Decor, Bear Print, Baby Boy Nursery, Forest Animal Wall Art, Printable, Digital DownloadWoodland Bear Nursery Print, Forest Animal Wall Art (Digital Download)
PERSONALIZED LEATHER WALLET MENS WALLET CUSTOM ENGRAVED WALLET ANNIVERSARY GIFT FOR HIMPersonalized Leather Wallet, Engraved Anniversary Gift for Him

Notice what the rewrites drop: "gift for her mom birthday" moves to tags, the all-caps wallet title becomes readable, and "Printable, Digital Download" collapses into one parenthetical. Nothing searchable is lost; it is relocated.

Why the title alone won't fix search

A clean title is the most visible fix, but in our audits it is rarely the only problem. The same listings usually have the focus keyword missing from the first sentence of the description, fewer than 13 tags, and unset attributes. If your listings get views but no sales, the title probably isn't the culprit at all; if they get no views, work through the six causes we see most.

Rewrite the title, tags and description together

Paste a shop name and the audit scores every title in it. Open any listing and the rewrite tool produces a short-style title, 13 tags, a description that opens with the focus keyword, and the attributes to set.

Questions sellers ask

How long can an Etsy title be?

Up to 140 characters including spaces. That is a limit, not a target: in search results Etsy shows roughly the first 50–60 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile, so the product name needs to come first.

Do keyword-stuffed Etsy titles still work?

Less every year. Etsy's own guidance since 2023 has pushed toward short, descriptive titles, and comma-chained titles convert worse because shoppers can't read them. Our audits flag three or more comma-separated phrases as a keyword chain.

Should I put 'Digital Download' in my title?

Yes, if the product is digital — shoppers need to know — but as a format note in parentheses after the product name, not tacked on the end of a keyword chain. "Nursery Bear Print, Woodland Wall Art (Digital Download)" is the pattern.

Can I use ALL CAPS or symbols in an Etsy title?

Etsy's title rules disallow titles in mostly capitals, reject the characters $ ^ and `, and allow % : and & only once each. Beyond the rules, capitals read as spam to shoppers.
