Etsy listing description generator

Drop in a few photos and facts, or point it at an existing listing, and get a description that opens with your focus keyword, answers a buyer's questions in labelled sections, and comes with a short title and 13 tags to match.

Why the first sentence matters more than the rest

Etsy's search indexes listing descriptions, and it weights the opening. In our shop audits, "focus keyword missing from the first sentence" is the second most common issue after keyword-chain titles — and it is almost always a description that opens with a greeting, a thank-you, or a line about the shop rather than the product.

The fix is mechanical: the first sentence names the item using the same subject-and-type phrase as the title. If the title is "Pressed Wildflower Frame, Real Dried Botanical Wall Art", the description starts "Pressed wildflower frame with real dried flowers…". The title and the first sentence now reinforce each other, and that opening line is also what Google shows as the snippet when the listing appears in web search.

The structure the Etsy listing writer produces

Every generated or rewritten description follows the same shape, because it is the shape buyers skim for on a phone:

  1. Opening sentence — the focus keyword, then what makes the item specific: material, size, where or how it's made.
  2. WHAT'S INCLUDED — the exact contents of the order, one line each. This is the section that prevents "I thought it came with the frame" refunds.
  3. DETAILS — dimensions, materials, colours, personalisation options, and the "each one is unique" line for natural or handmade variation.
  4. HOW TO PRINT (digital) or SIZE & CARE (physical) — file formats and sizes included, printing advice, or washing and care instructions.
  5. SHIPPING — processing time, where it ships from, packaging, gift options. Short, because the shipping profile carries the rest.
  6. AI disclosure — only when the product facts you gave require it under Etsy's rules (for example, artwork generated with AI). The writer adds the sentence and tells you which listing-form box to tick.

Section labels are capitalised plain words, not emoji or decorative dividers, so they survive copy-paste into Etsy's editor and read well in the collapsed mobile view.

Before and after

BEFOREno product named · no sections

Welcome to my shop! Thank you so much for stopping by :) This beautiful frame is handmade with love. Flowers may vary slightly as they are natural. Please message me with any questions! Check out my other items too.

AFTERfocus keyword first · 4 sections

Pressed wildflower frame with real dried flowers arranged by hand on a cream linen backing, in a 5×7 inch natural wood frame. WHAT'S INCLUDED • One framed pressed-flower arrangement, ready to hang or stand • Kraft gift box and care card DETAILS • Frame: solid pine, natural finish, 5×7 in (13×18 cm) with glass front • Flowers: wildflowers picked and pressed in Vermont; each piece is one of a kind, so colours and stems vary from the photos • Backing: cream linen SIZE & CARE • Keep out of direct sunlight to preserve colour • Dust the glass with a dry cloth SHIPPING • Ships in 1–2 business days from Vermont in a padded box • Gift note available at checkout

The "after" is longer, but every line answers a question a buyer would otherwise ask in a message — or not ask, and not buy. It also removes the "check out my other items" line, which does nothing for search and pulls attention away from the purchase.

What else comes with the description

A description on its own is half a listing. The writer produces the whole set so the pieces agree with each other:

  • A short-style title under 140 characters in the pattern Etsy now favours — see the title checker for the structure.
  • Exactly 13 tags, each 20 characters or fewer, multi-word, no duplicates, covering styles, occasions and synonyms the title can't fit — checkable with the tag checker.
  • The attributes to set for the category, so the listing appears in the sidebar filters (why that matters).
  • Alt text for each photo.
  • A policy check that flags wording Etsy associates with reselling, prohibited services or undisclosed AI before you paste anything.

Two ways to use it

From photos. Upload up to five photos and answer a handful of questions: category, what it is, materials, size, how it was made, personalisation. The writer reads the photos for colour, style and setting and drafts the full listing. Good for new products.

From an existing listing. Run the free audit, open a listing and press Rewrite. We fetch its photos and current text from your public shop, keep the facts, and restructure the title, tags and description. Old and new are shown side by side with the changes highlighted, and you copy whichever fields you want into Etsy. Nothing is published for you.

Questions sellers ask

Does Etsy read listing descriptions for search?

Yes. Since 2022 Etsy's search has indexed descriptions, with the most weight on the opening. That is why the first sentence should name the product in the same words as the title, and why a description that starts with 'Welcome to my shop!' is a missed signal.

How long should an Etsy description be?

Long enough to answer the questions a buyer would otherwise message you about: what's included, size or file format, materials, how it ships. In practice 150–300 words in short labelled sections. Our audit flags descriptions under 160 characters and descriptions with no sections.

Do I have to disclose that AI wrote my description?

No. Etsy's AI disclosure requirement applies to the product itself — if the design or artwork was made with AI, you declare it in the listing form. Using AI to help write your title and description needs no disclosure. The writer tells you when the product answers you gave would require one.

Will the generated description get my listing flagged?

Every draft runs through a policy check that flags phrasing Etsy associates with reselling or prohibited services before you copy it. Nothing is published to Etsy by Listwright; you paste the text yourself.

What does the Etsy listing writer cost?

Three listings are free, no card required. After that one credit produces one full listing (title, 13 tags, description, attributes, alt text); plans start at a few dollars a month and audits stay free.
